Character counter
X doesn't count letters, it counts weighted characters. Links always cost 23, emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters cost two each. This counts the same way X does.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text.
- Pick what you're writing: a post, a bio or a display name.
- Watch the bar — amber near the limit, red over it.
- Trim until it fits.
Questions people ask
Why is the number higher than the letters I typed?
Because emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters each count as two. A post that looks short can still go over.
Why does a short link count as 23 characters?
X wraps every link in its own shortener, and the shortened version is always the same length. A ten character link and a two hundred character link both cost 23, which also means shortening a link yourself saves you nothing.
What are the limits?
280 for a post, 160 for a bio, 50 for a display name and 15 for a handle. Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters.
Do photos use up characters?
No. Images, videos, GIFs and polls are free, so you keep the full limit for text.
